Measuring A Filter Bag
Accurate measurements lead to the best fit.
Properly fitting bags and cages are important for achieving long filter bag life and optimal baghouse performance.
The best way to ensure a properly fitting filter bag for your specific baghouse is to have one of our technical representatives visit your location. Alternatively, if you have extra bags available, you can send a sample to FabCo Industrial Services.
Most dust collectors have been upgraded over the years due to the need for new permits which called for reconfiguration of the bag house in which case OEM configurations will not fit.
Because of this you will need to obtain accurate measurements for your filters before ordering replacement filter bags. We discuss this in more detail down below!

Tips for Measuring a Filter Bag:
Find the diameter of the bag – lay the bag flat and measure the flat width:
Flat width x 2 ÷ 3.14 = bag diameter
7.625″ x 2 = 16 ÷ 3.14 = 4.85″ diameter
Find the Over All Length (OAL) by measuring from the top of bag to the bottom of bag (pull tight)
Find the Tube Sheet Size – Measure with a caliper (needs to be exact)
Measuring Filter Bags
Top Load, Snap-Band Filter Bag – Felt
- Flat width: First, flatten the bag and measure its width across.
- Length: Measure along the seam running the length of the bag. Start at the center of the snap band. End at the first stitch at the bottom of the bag.
- Cage-to-Bag fit: There should be a ¼” to 3/8” pinch; the bottom of the bag should have about a thumb’s width between the bottom of the cage and the disc bottom of the bag.
Top Load, Snap-Band Filter Bag – Woven Fiberglass
- Flat width: Flatten the bag and measure its width across.
- Length: Measure along the seam running the length of the bag, starting at the center of the snap band and ending at the first stitch at the bottom of the bag.
- Cage-to-Bag fit: There should be a 1/8” or less pinch, but the bag shouldn’t be stretched tight around the cage.
Top Load, Snap-Band Filter Bag – Felt with Membrane
- Flat width: Flatten the bag and measure its width across.
- Length: Measure along the seam running bag length. Start at the center of the snap band; end at the first stitch at the bag’s bottom.
- Cage-to-Bag fit: There should be a 1/8” or less pinch and not stretched tight around the cage.
Shaker Style Filter Bag
- Flat width: Flatten the bag and measure its width across.
- Length: Measure along the seam running the length of the bag, from the end of the snap band to the end of the bag, not including the tail.
- Length of the tail: Measure along the seam from the end of the bag to the end of the tail.
- Flat width of the tail: Flatten the tail and measure its width.
- Tail layers: Determine if the tail is 3-ply or 4-ply by pinching the material and feeling for layers.
- Wear cuff: If there is a wear cuff at the snap band end of the bag, measure its length and width.

NOTE: Do not wash or dry clean bags. This will clog the pores and ruin the correct operation of the filter bags. They should not be exposed to moisture as this will shrink the fabric. Of course – the best solution is to ship us a new or used bag that can be used as a guide sample. Or have a member of our knowledgeable sales staff come to your location and spec out your dust collector needs.
